Longboard Skid Plates

Longboard Skid Plates

5-axis CNC machined aluminum skid plates to replace the plastic ones which ship with Boosted Board V2s. The skid plates protect the drive belts from abrasion when riding over bumps, pebbles, and certain curved surfaces, and wear down rapidly. The replacement aluminum plates are significantly harder and last longer, prolonging drive belt longevity.

Op 2 Fixturing

Fixturing for the second machining operation was non trivial due to the curved, drafted surfaces from the first operation. The initial soft jaw design relied purely on friction and did not produce a sufficient amount of retention, even with a sandblasted surface finish to increase friction, resulting in a thrown part during a face milling operation.

Initial soft jaw design with no retention features

The second design iteration used rounded pins in the softjaw which would interface with conical divots on the drafted surface to prevent the part from pulling out

The third and final fixturing method used temporary threaded holes in the part to hold it in place. While this added a threading operation in the first setup, the final part had no fixturing marks on the outside surface.
